McGuire was the gold standard for catchers until the emergence of Mickey Cochrane. Tough and durable, McGuire served as a player and player/manager from 1884-1912, a remarkable feat considering the protective equipment and gloves of the time. Indeed it was McGuire who was the first catcher in baseball history to “pad” his catchers mitt, by stopping at a butcher shop before games and buying a thick steak to place inside his glove.
