It’s not often that you get the chance to own a high grade rookie card of the greatest player in the history of his or her sport. But that’s exactly what we have here, with this shining NM 7 of Wayne Gretzky’s 1979 Topps card.
Gretzky put up incomprehensible numbers, the likes of which will never again be seen on the ice. Sports Illustrated once claimed that Gretzky was the “Babe Ruth of professional hockey”, which might be the most accurate description of “The Great One” we have ever found.
Unlike most scorers, who are often considered selfish, Gretzky’s assist numbers were just as prolific as his goal totals. He was perfection on ice.
His card here, isn’t as perfect as Gretzky was on ice, but it’s close. The Great One’s image lacks the tiniest bit of clarity and the full bleed borders show the tiniest bit of wear at the bottom border, but those “flaws” are barely noticeable to the naked eye.
Given hockey’s continuing increase in popularity, this card could be one of the most undervalued in our entire auction, offering substantial potential returns.
