You’re looking at one of the earliest and most incredibly rare Rogers Hornsby cards ever printed. Ironically, this early photo of The Rajah, shows baseball’s greatest right-handed hitter in a rarely seen fielding pose. While Hornsby was respectable with his glove, he was celebrated for his bat and rarely pictured without it.
Like the other Mendelsohn cards in this auction, this Hornsby should generate substantial interest, if for no other reason, few example of the offering are known to exist.
Fairly graded at a VG 3, this Hornsby sports a dynamic image not used in any other set, sharp contrast and a look that can only come from a glass plate negative. The corners show slight rounding, and the cards outer borders show handling, but do not detract from the overall image and beauty of this cardboard class.
As we’ve said often in this auction, for the advanced collector or investor, your likelihood of even seeing this card at auction any time in the near future is slim.
