In 1933, when the Goudey Gum Company released its inaugural baseball card offering, this was the Babe Ruth card the world wanted --a richly colored, captivating image of the most famous, most recognizable person in the world, not to mention the greatest baseball player to walk the Earth.
Despite being a double print, Goudey knew demand for this particular card would be high. And they were correct, because to this day, card #144 still makes the hearts of most collectors and most investors skip a beat.
Ruth’s sweeping signature is topped with the simple inscription of “Sincerely,” adding a tiny personal touch to Ruth’s mammoth presence. A presence felt even when portrayed on a simple piece of cardboard.
If graded, we would estimate this card at a solid VG-EX 4. There’s some rounding at the corners, but no foxing. There’s some toning along the card’s border and on the back, but the card remains remarkably well preserved. Ruth’s signature even shows a subtle hint of fading. But in the end, the card displays with the same dominance and presence as the man depicted did every day of his life.
Whether you’re adding to your collection or adding to your portfolio, consider this card a must have if you’re striving for something far above the ordinary.
