Ruth’s signature on the card is boldly scribed, having been written with a classic steel tipped fountain pen. Authenticator’s at PSA/DNA judged the autograph at a NM 7, which we personally feel is conservative, so a regrade might be a consideration.
The card itself shows signs of being well-loved and handled but not abused. There is some toning to the card, but nothing that reaches the level that would significantly devalue this cardboard classic, particularly given its subject matter.
An advantage this particular card has over other red background Ruth’s is the depth of the red color behind Ruth’s image. Goudey cards were produced using a rather primitive silk screen process that produced beautifully colored finished product that both collectors and baseball fans loved. However, because of the nature of the printing process, subtle color variations exist within individual cards, making more vibrant examples more valuable than examples which can take on more of a “dull” or “flat” look.
For the serious investor or advanced collector, this Ruth specimen delivers the opportunity to own one of the world’s most iconic cards, while also providing a vehicle that, again, given market conditions, provides an opportunity for substantial long- and short term growth.
