Bobby Orr fans will disagree, but Eddie Shore is still the standard by which defensemen are judged. Shore’s rushes were legendary and his toughness is incomprehensible by today’s standards. Once during practice, the Bruin great’s ear was almost ripped off. When doctors insisted on amputating the ear, Shore protested until he found a doctor who would sew the ear back in place. But that wasn’t enough, Shore refused any deadening agents and held a mirror, so he could watch the ear being sewn back in place. Now that’s an old time hockey tough guy for you! Shore led Boston to their first Stanley Cup and won the Hart Trophy four times. But to truly understand Shore’s greatness, witness these words from The Hockey Hall of Fame, where Shore was enshrined in 1947: “An imposing blend of raw talent and intimidation, defenseman Eddie Shore was one of the greatest ever to play his position in any era and his end-to-end rushes became every bit as famous as his crushing bodychecks and nasty disposition. When Shore retired as a player, he became a team owner and manager and continued to be a demanding and successful hockey figure.”
